Today Ms. Summers’ class had the opportunity to practice decimal and percentage skills with a student choice activity. Ms. Summers gave students a $500 budget and asked them to identify 5 items they would purchase for Christmas. Students had to calculate their subtotal and then apply a 9% sales tax to their list. As students made their calculations Ms. Summers added a twist by moving around the room distributing coupons. Students then had to determine how they could use the coupon effectively to make their budget go further. After Ms. Summers approved a shopping budget, students began a restaurant challenge that required them to calculate the cost of their meal using a real menu. Students had to then calculate gratuity for their service. This lesson challenged students to utilize technology and recently learned skills to solve real-world problems!
