Ms. Fox and many other teachers at Greenbrier Middle School are employing the best research-based strategies to support student reading. One of these strategies involves teaching students to spot “signposts” in their reading, and to make text annotations. Students learn how to spot “contrast and contradictions”, “words of the wiser”, and “aha moments”. All of these clues within the text help students comprehend what they are reading while formulating new ideas about the content of the text. This activity also helps students prepare their thoughts for writing later.
